Traditionally, scientific research is based on trail & error within multiple sub-studies that work together toward a specific objective, such as a new product or production technology. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is unique in the sense that it allows scientists to invert this process. The desired objective is brought to life in a digital environment using 'digital twins' (a virtual 'mirror' of the desired real-world situation), while machine learning helps determine how to achieve it. Although AI is already widely applied in engineering research, this is new in the field of Bioscience and synthetic biology. On November 8th, AI4b.io organizes its first webinar discussing this topic.
AI4b.io is the Artificial Intelligence Lab for Biosciences which was founded early 2021 by TU Delft and is funded by Royal DSM. This laboratory is the first of its kind in Europe to apply artificial intelligence (AI) to full-scale biomanufacturing, from microbial strain development to process optimization and factory scheduling.
The AI4b.io Lab is part of the Dutch National Innovation Center for AI (ICAI) network, and is led by Professor Marcel Reinders, Director TU Delft Bioengineering Institute. The steering committee is completed at DSM by the Scientific Directors Hans Roubos and Henk Noorman, and the Program Manager Renger Jellema.

Artificial intelligence is recognized as one of the key drivers of modern innovation in many disciplines, including food systems and biomanufacturing. DSM - a global science-based company in Health, Nutrition and Bioscience - has joined forces with Delft University of Technology and established the AI4b.io laboratory to explore new applications of artificial intelligence in bioscience and its industrial applications. Together, five lines of research have been established to explore how AI technologies can be used to optimize biomanufacturing at different scales: from factory unit planning and the development of digital twins of fermentation processes, to self-organizing laboratories and advanced microbial strain building cycles, to understanding the interaction between microbiomes and their hosts. Today, you will learn about the ambitions of AI4b.io and how we plan to solve the challenges.

Towards smart biomanufacturing | advanced measurements, big data and digital twins
Industry 4.0 is about smart manufacturing, also and especially in biomanufacturing. Smart manufacturing relies on the ability to collect and interpret large data sets. Some of the key technologies that can potentially contribute to gathering more informative process data are therefore highlighted. The latter includes advanced measurement technology, but also software tools for interpretation of the data. Furthermore, we demonstrate how novel measurements can be used in the implementation of more advanced monitoring and control strategies. Finally, opportunities offered by digital twins are discussed, and the use of big data generators – for example using a digital shadow of an existing process – is illustrated for education and training purposes

Nostics | Combining Photonics and ML/AI for instant medical diagnostics

In this talk Vincent will describe the journey in the development of Nostics and the background of the use of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in its platform. Sensitivity and specificity is extremely important in all types of diagnostics products. By using ML/AI algorithms, Nostics is able to gain high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of various pathogens. The main focus is on bacteria from culture, where the use of ML/AI allows us to accurately predict the outcomes of a sample measurement. The software infrastructure and classification models are key to achieve Nostics’ goal to enable accessible and affordable diagnostics.
